2010 Race Results!!
The 12th Annual CBC kicked off Friday night at the Hammock Wine & Cheese Shoppe which was hosted by Damien and Gary Collins (owners) and the CBC organizers. BBQ beef and chicken, smashed potatoes, field peas, baked beans, and sweet corn were on the menu. Mullet music thanks to Jim Millsaps, David Holbrook, Dan Chellemi, John Hankinson, Rick Stevens, Jeff Million and Richard Bassil. Besides good grinds and sponsorship beer from Coors-Miller (Scotty Carter), those who came out Friday were able to register, pick up shirts, and sign up for the next day’s race events. The CBC thanks Teri Howell for organizing Registration and Josh Hellstrom for organizing the races.
Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day for the CBC. While there were no waves for surfing, calm and clear waters made for excellent ocean events. Organizers met at the site at 6:30am and set up the course, tents, p.a. system, food and drink stands, and registration tables. At 8:30 the races began with the runners ‘taking one for the team’ so to speak as running conditions were hot and muggy (sorry but I don’t think we will ever get to starting runs at 7:30am when it is a little cooler). The Kahuna contestants enjoyed the transition from land to sea, especially considering that the ocean temps were around 75F. While everyone recovered from the main events, relays were organized which pitted the young guns against the experienced but old pros (as well as other various assemblages thereof). Ok, the young guns won but where were they at 8:30am start of the main reaces let alone 6:30am??.....!!!
After the relay races, ceremonies emceed by Kemp and Courtney Howell highlighted the special nature of the event. Kemp began by dedicating the 12th Annual CBC to Cory Van Leer and his surviving family. The CBC greatly missed Cory’s presence at the event this year but he was on everybody’s mind throughout the day. After the dedication, Courtney invited three guest speakers to share their stories with the CBC listeners. First up was Lolita Jerido, campaign director of the North Florida Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. She gave us encouraging statistics of the progress LLS has had in funding research which has helped cancer victims in our own backyard. Second up was Anthony Tornese, a young man who received a bone marrow transplant as part of his leukemia treatment. Anthony’s cancer is in remission and he was very happy to tell everyone thanks for their support. He also mentioned that the transplant changed his blood type form 0-neg to B-pos! The last speaker was Andy Stone who has been in remission for 17 years. He was holding his two young sons whom he never thought he would get a chance to be a father to.
Following the speakers, the drawing for a paddleboard donated by Global Surf Industries (John O’Connor) and Freeride Surf and Skate (Tom Glikes) was held. Ron Dubois from Melbourne, FL was the lucky winner.
The lei ceremony followed. Two honorees passed leis around the circle of friends: Teddie Schroeder whose sister Avery has survived leukemia but couldn’t make the event and Anthony Tornese. Both Teddie and Anthony paddled their leis out into the ocean in honor of all cancer victims.
The ensuing cookout of hot dogs and hamburgers was a real treat. The CBC thanks Jeff Hembry and Marc MacCormac for cooking and Southern Fuelwood for sponsoring. While the tide continued to come in a few small waves appeared for some post cookout surfing. All in all a good day at the beach!
Saturday evening many gathered at JT’s Seafood Shack for some more fun. Johnny Matanzas and the Hombres (John Hankinson, TR De Roche, Jim Stafford, Mike Guerreres, Jeff Million, Jim Millsaps and Dan Chellemi) were the featured music. In lieu of paying the musicians, Johnny McLemore (owner) donated $500 to the CBC. Combining this donation with donations from all of the other sponsors and contributors, the CBC will raise more than $20,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphomas Society.
The CBC thanks everyone for making the 12th Annual event a huge success!!
John Mathews and associates at Health Plan Services raised $530 in honor of Briggitte McDermott. The CBC thanks this group for using the event to honor Briggitte
